Pupil, disrupting expectations
Created by Dutch designer Basten Leijh and inspired by the curious eyes of a crab, Modular’s Pupil will potentially fill all your miniaturization fantasies. To introduce our new downlighter in a way that was worthy of its design, we asked visual artist Joost Jansen to let himself be charmed by the unusual luminaire, and create a short animation. Pupil brings life to thought and animation to stillness. A world will open up for your lighting expressions.
A surreal expression
Pupil’s design turns everything around. Your expectation of light, the perspective of a space, a world you thought you knew. Pupil’s organic shape looks like it’s alive, says Joost. Black white, man woman. A contrast of colours and rich textures that immediately look as if they fit together. A small, curvy shape, suggestive of attraction and sensuality. While creating his short film, Joost’s imagination traveled to the surreal and came back with a story of a man and a woman, their chemistry and world disrupted and transformed by Pupil.
The tricky underside of Pupil
The quirky little curve of Pupil is the twist you didn’t see coming. Just when your eye is confidently going where Pupil’s light beam is pointing, your mind realizes otherwise. As Pupil points straight down, the light beam points 30º, lighting an enigmatic disturbance in a perfect world. Tilt the body 30º, and you get 60º light orientability for a wall-wash effect, unveiling an alternate reality. Perhaps one that lures you in for a dip in the ocean. If you need a little quiet, a light beam to caress the ground, simply tilt the housing slightly up.
You’ll be surprised by Pupil’s size. Cozily fitting in the palm of your hand, it’ll look anything but tranquil. Indeed, Pupil is charmingly stubborn and doesn’t conform to what is expected of a downlighter. Playfully sticking out of the ceiling, this little one will leave you turning your head.
Pupil is the inquisitive little eye. It will radiate warm light to illuminate high-end residences, and lighting expressions in hospitality environments and small boutiques. Add even more emotion with any of 3 types of click-on anti-glare accessories: Honeycomb, Snoot and Crossblade. Welcome Pupil into your architectural lighting world and discover how it can show you new ones. One thing, it probably won’t be what you expect.
