A little story about marbles and winks!
October 09, 2015
We want to let you know that Modular has again launched four new lighting solutions! We’re quite happy about them and hope you will share in our happiness. Let’s introduce you to our Wink, Marbul, Marcel, SLD75 and new M-LED!
Wink & Asy Wink: a spotlight with a bit of wink-wink humour
A wink can be used as a greeting, an attempted flirt or could even be an irritating twitch. Now then, what is our new spotlight all about? We found it hard to pin (asy) Wink down to one specific style, although we must acknowledge that with Modular, all of our products have always contained a humorous element.
This fixture is a combination of a bit of Modular “wink-wink” humour and the technical skills of award-winning designers Couvreur & Devos, who designed almost a dozen of lighting solutions for Modular since 2010. This resulted in a spotlight that is characterized by a straightforward approach, detailed finishing and sleek design, but before all, it is semi-recessed in the ceiling while just peeking out over the edge.
Wink blends in with the ceiling, while standing out at the same time. This fixture will instantly make your interior appear more inspired. Its feminine curves have sharp-edged, as well as smooth contours and this way it always looks different, depending on your point of view in the room. Maybe this is precisely what Wink is: different from any other type of spotlight.
Marbul, anything but average
In Roeselare, people call a marble ‘bolleket’ or a ‘Merrebol’. We have combined these names into Marbul for our new fixture, because let’s face it; Marbul just has a much better ring to it! One could say that the name is anything but average, but so is this fixture.
Marbul feels equally at ease on walls and on ceilings, making it suited for use in private homes and in the hospitality industry. Its smart design, characterized by atypical, asymmetric shapes, was combined with advanced technology, as is the case with most Modular products. It’s an energy-efficient surface mounted solution, perfect for your renovation projects.
The original briefing for Marbul was to ‘create a good and sophisticated housing’. That’s why Modular developed a completely new rotation system that outperforms the typical gimbal system. What’s even more; all underlying technology and all screws have been completely concealed. To satisfy consumer demand, the housing into which the LED gear is integrated has been kept as elegant and light as possible, making the spheres appear to be floating. Lastly, Marbul is also extremely easy to install.
The lamp units, which are arranged asymmetrically, are a typical Modular detail: the units are tilted without any visible wiring. On top of that, the round shape of the lamp units also conducts heat, resulting in a more efficient and effective lighting solution. Marbul comes in black-, white- or donkey grey structure, with one or two spheres that can be adjusted individually.
Marcel, the best of both worlds for retailers
One of Modular’s latest offspring is Marcel, a multi-purpose spotlight with a high lumen output. This spot was a specific request of the retail industry, since other fixtures (such as the (Mini) Multiple), which seemed the logical choice for this type of use, were actually found to be either a little too large or too small. With Marcel, Modular offers the perfect response to customer demand for an efficient, high performant, square, adjustable and recessed spotlight for retail application.
Marcel combines the best of both worlds, since its size is precisely in between the Mini Multiple and the Multiple at 140mm by 140mm (for the 1xLED unit). Customers can choose different colour temperatures (2700K, 3000K, 3500K and 4000K), lumen output (up to 3000lm) from a series of standard solutions and add different lighting accessories, such as spread lenses, honeycombs or transparant glasses. On top of that, Marcel comes in a square or rectangular model, depending on the number (one, two or three) of LED modules. Because of its flexibility this sleek, directional recessed fixture will be used mainly in retail settings, which usually require high light level and low energy consumption.
Marcel is very easy to install and can be built into any ceiling with a thickness from 1mm to 30mm, regardless of the material it’s made of. You simply secure this spotlight into the ceiling by tightening two screws. The bionic heatsink, developed by Modular, ensures optimum heat dissipation, while the bracket and unique tilting mechanism allow you to easily direct the light source with nothing more than a broom- or any other stick!
M-LED 70: a technological upgrade
In our series “Revival of the icons”, Modular has developed a new M-LED module to upgrade your halogen fixtures. Recently Modular replaced its AR111 halogen lamp module with the M-LED 111, an in-house designed LED module. This presented a perfect opportunity for the lighting specialist to future-proof a few of its icons.
Thanks to the new M-LED 70, several lighting solutions that still date from the halogen era are now available in a LED version. This will for instance be the case for Mini multiple, Mini multiple trimless and Haloscan 128. M-LED 70 allows you to fully upgrade these fixtures to LED technology, instead of buying a completely new light fixture!
As always Modular has done everything to develop a technologically efficient module that is very easy to install through specially installed springs that allow you to click the module into the lamp ring. With the “M-LED-70”, Modular Lighting Instruments is mainly targeting the relamping segment, resulting in a longer lifecycle for previously purchased light fixtures.
SLD75
Our well renowned SL75 lighting profile has been redeveloped and is now LED dedicated. SLD75 is a completely customizable linear lighting solution, guaranteeing the perfect size for your setting. The LED technology, combined with different lenses, prismatic poly or PMMA grants you the perfect solution for office lighting with a low UGR (anti-glare). SLD75 equipped with standard poly is perfect for general lighting and is even offered in standard preset dimming in order to guarantee you a lower power concumption and longer life cycle. Following Drupl70, SLD75 is again an extension of our office compliant lighting portfolio.
Why you should download our updated app

In 2015 we've added some new things to our digital communication mix: not only are you reading this article on our brand new blog, but we also increased our presence on different social media networks. On top of that we upgraded our existing app and added an Android version. If you haven’t downloaded our app, we would like to give you a few reasons to do so immediately!
First things first: our extensive catalogue is a great tool to find out what Modular has to offer or to show your clients some inspiring images. However, it's not always easy to take this 750-page book with you everywhere you go. What you can take with you all the time, is your tablet.
Use our app as a source of inspiration for yourself or your clients. It allows you to find and show pictures of how others have used our fixtures in their interiors before. Further, you can also find all technical information you need about our lighting solutions. On top of all of that, you can even read our blogposts and find all contact information of our different offices throughout the world.
What is even more important, is that we are constantly launching new products and the app is the quickest way to be up-to-date. We do print new catalogue updates, but it’s always easier to download the latest updates on your tablet!
Our updated app can be consulted even when you’re not connected to the internet. The initial installation of the app may take a while (depending on your internet bandwidth), but it’s worthwhile, since you can use the app when you’re on the go and deprived of a decent internet connection.
What’s more, we not only updated our existing iOS app, but we've also launched an Android version, which can be installed on tablets, as well as on smartphones!
Now you're feeling like giving it a try? Go ahead and download our iOS or Android app and tell us what you think. If you have any suggestions for new features or updates: feel free to tell us what’s on your mind.

The importance of a good lighting plan
February 25, 2016
If you’ve always wanted to know more about the importance of a propper lighting plan, you surely have to keep reading. Even if it’s unconscious, you’ll always have expectations or desires concerning the lighting of your home, office or places you visit. At home you might want to have a certain kind of mood in the living room, you want to highlight certain pieces of art or pictures hanging on the wall, whereas in the hallway you’ll need bright and functional lighting. All this information is incorporated in a lighting plan.
DOEN and Modular have worked together on the creation of this kind of plans for different projects in the past. On their website DOEN recently interviewed our colleague Marco Tertoolen, general manager at Modular Netherlands. On popular demand, we’ve translated this interview from Dutch to English, so everyone can enjoy what Marco had to say.
Modular’s advice on lighting
Modular is known for its technically advanced architectural lighting instruments that are always designed with some kind of sparkling simplicity, be they real eye catchers or simple fixtures that are to be incorporated into the architecture. Their products are stylish and fit every interior.
Marco Tertoolen, general manager at Modular Netherlands, is still an appreciated lighting advisor, despite his busy agenda. DOEN asked him to shine his light on lighting in general and Modular’s approach at the specific DOEN projects. How can we provide optimal lighting during all seasons?
Interview Marco Tertoolen
Jean by DOEN (J): "You once said ‘light provides relief’. What exactly do you mean by that?"
Marco (M): "I think it’s clear that without lighting there’s no reflection and without reflection no sight. Light literally enlights places and provides relief. For instance, through reflection of the fixture on the wall, depth is created in a room. So light can never be underappreciated."
According to Marco, one can accentuate architectural features of a room with the right lighting. Fixtures should blend in with a building and reinforce it, instead of undermining it, which is sometimes the case.
J: "DOEN has become a real fan of Modular over the years. Why do you think you have a large fan base? What makes Modular unique?"
M: "Modular tries to be innovative and timeless at the same time. We design products by and for architects."
Marco about the lighting plan at Kortekade in Kralingen, a project by DOEN:
“This concerns two attached properties which have a lot of height differences and are connected through a passageway. By using slick fixtures with warm LED lights, we’ve created a nice contrast in these historical mansions. It was pointed out to us that depth should be accentuated in this project, so that’s what we’ve done. If you look inside the property from the outside, you will even be able to see the rear areas, like the other building’s hallway. Though we’ve used four different kinds of fixtures, we still managed to create unity. We achieved this by continuously repeating the fixtures. Médard, for instance, sets the right mood in the front of the building and lights up the colours and materials of the display cabinet. Rektor, on the other hand, is used as a ceiling- and wallfixture, while Multiple creates nice light wash effect through the passageway to the other building. In short: the whole building is made completely visible.”
J: "What’s your favorite Modular fixture?"
M: "That’s Nomad, without any doubt! It’s a fixture that we’ve launched in 1986 and it was highly technological for that time. This aluminum fixture intentionally shows all cabling, making it a ‘naked’ light source, which was really progressive for the eighties. It’s a real icon!"
J: "What’s the most cliché application of lighting?"
M: "A simple lightbulb hanging from an iron cord. I think we’re done with that one."
J: "What’s a real no go these days?"
M: "RGB-coloured lighting!"
A passion for lighting.
Finally, Marco talks about his passion for lighting. What he likes about the lighting industry, is its innovativeness, the technology, its serving role with architecture and the creativity that comes with that. “If we take a closer look at our Médard for instance: the designer (Bleijh) first needed to acquire the necessary theoretical knowledge about the newest LED technology before they were able to design this fixture. He then put different technologies (cooling, light source and transformer) together in one small cylindrical housing. This resulted in a luminaire that can easily stand on its own, as well as being wall mounted or fixed on a rail without any difficult structural preparations. Don’t you find that amazing?!”
Is there something we can wish Marco when it comes to lighting? Marco: “The Artichoke lamp by Louis Poulsen is something I’d like to have some day. It’s the most beautiful decorative lamp on the market!”
Wink awarded with Design Plus Award
March 07, 2016
At Light+Building, the world’s leading trade fair for the lighting industry, the organization traditionally holds a ‘Design Plus, powered by Light+Building’ competition. This implies that an international and independent jury of experts rewards different products of exhibitors at the fair for their innovativeness and future-oriented design. Guess who was one of the lucky winners?
The Design Plus competition is held by Messe Frankfurt and the German Design Council (Rat für Formgebung), the centre of excellence for design in Frankfurt. The jury mainly focusses on the sustainability and convenience of the products and uses three main criteria: technology, design and ecology. This is why the award serves as a quality seal for products combining futuristic orientation, innovative design and energy-efficient technology. For the 2016 edition, the jury awarded 25 products, four of which were also given the ‘Best of Award’.
All in all, 129 companies from 25 different countries entered 214 products and we're more than happy to tell you that our Wink was one of the lucky four to win a Best of Award this year! We are the only Belgian company that won an award this year, which obviously makes us very proud!
Next to this competition, 88 students and young graduates of product and industrial design or (interior) architecture entered their visionary concepts and solutions. Thirteen of them were chosen for the Design Plus Award, three of them receiving a ‘Best of’ award. This presents an excellent opportunity for young designers to show their abilities to the industry.
The award-winning products of both the exhibitors and students are on show this week during Light+Building at a specific exhibition area at Hall 1.2, Stand A51. Additionally, all award-winning products will be featured in a special magazine, which will be distributed at the fair.
Further information about Light + Building and photographs of the award winning products can be found here.
A chat with Frieke Janssens
April 29, 2016
In April we have launched a new communication theme inspired by those of us who are very sensitive to light. We took this opportunity to shoot new campaign images, as Modular often did in the past (as you can see in our brand movie or on our Pinterest account). This time we worked together with one of Belgium’s most talented photographers: Frieke Janssens. Let’s meet her and find out what she thinks about light and our new theme.
Artists, (interior) designers and architects are all people who work with light very consciously, but there are others who are even more aware of light’s power. Albinos and night butterflies, for instance, sense light before they have even seen it. These people and animals are a great source of inspiration for Modular. That’s why we would like to put them into the spotlights. Figuratively of course!
Shooting new campaign images is not something to be taken lightly. You want to work together with a team of professionals and make sure the images show and tell everything you want them to, regarding mood, atmosphere, brand, products etc. Frieke Janssens and her team are said professionals. She's born in Bruges and mostly known to be a non-conformist photographer who likes to incorporate humor and surrealism into her work. This is why she fits the Modular profile. You might have seen her work before, since she has done some striking and controversial projects, like this series of photographs about smoking kids.
Modular (M): We can imagine that light is key for a photographer as yourself. Can u describe what light means to you?
Frieke (F): To me, light is the very essence of photography. This goes for the 19th century Daguerreotypes (the first publically used photographic process), as for the digital camera’s we use today.
Together with the concept and subject of the photograph, light is the most important element of a great picture. Even if the image isn’t 100% sharp, light can make up for it and save your picture. This also works the other way around: a perfectly sharp image doesn’t work without good lighting…
One can play with lighting. It can help you express a feeling or vision. That’s why I sometimes see myself as a manipulator of light. You could say that I knead the light in such a way that it fits the concept and subject of the shoot. This often is the hardest part of the job. Once the light is taken care of, it’s only a matter of guiding the model and pressing the shutter button.
M: What’s your favorite type of lighting?
F: That depends. I used to prefer flashlight, which tends to ‘freeze’ the subject. The thing is that you can’t hide the use of this kind of lighting. You immediately feel it when a picture was taken with flash lighting. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing by the way, but every different type of light evokes another feeling.
Today I tend to work more with continuous light or a combination of daylight and flashlight. It feels different and looks more cinematic. I believe my recent work as a moviedirector has taught me how to work with continuous lighting, which needs a completely different approach.
M: How did you encorporate ‘sensitivity to light’ into the new campaign images for Modular? Did you pay extra attention to something in particular?
The concept was very clear from the start. We would work with albino models and animals, so I wanted to make sure that there was a clear contrast between them and the dark setting. This would make the models and animals ‘pop out’. Afterwords, we edited the images a bit, so that the paleness of the models was highlighted even more.
I think that the images display the right mood and atmosphere. Everything fits: the poses and looks of the models, or the way they face the camera all contribute to this. The animals and models really connect. The relation between albino man and –animal is what sets the right mood in these images.
Casa Decor 2016
May 24, 2016
Casa Decor is the main event for the Spanish design scene and welcomes Spain’s finest (interior) designers to Madrid. It’s the place to be to connect with professionals or to discover the latest trends and creations. For this event different top designers are designated one room to show what they’re capable of. Modular and Marisa Gallo of desiging agency Interiorisimo are participating in the ongoing 2016 edition.
For Modular, this is the very first edition, but for the people at Interiorisimo Casa Decor feels like home. They have participated at this special design event before in 2010, ’11, ’12 and ’15. This is the first time, however, they get to restyle the restaurant area. Let's meet these lovely people!
Who is Marisa Gallo?
Marisa Gallo is the founder and General Director of interior design company Interiorisimo. Born in Madrid, she studied interior design and architecture at the Institución Artística de Enseñanza (IADE). She’s a respected interior designer with over twenty years of experience and an impressive portfolio of over one hundred projects! On top of that, she also featured as a television show host for the program ‘Decoración fácil’ on Canal Decasa, where she helped people design their homes.
For this year's edition of Casa Décor Marisa has decorated the restaurant area of the building on the Calle de Atocha 34 in Madrid.
What does Interiorisimo stand for?
Interiorisimo is an interior designing company that adopted its own style by combining elegance, classicism and new design trends.
The team at Interiorisimo takes care of the concept and complete realisation of interior designing projects. They have experience with residential, hospitality and retail projects, both permanent and temporary installations.
What was the plan with the restaurant?
Marisa combined different styles, thus creating a disruptive interior for the restaurant. She was inspired by the tropics and flamingos in particular. To her, flamingos represent elegance, which can be seen in the interior as well.
Modular was chosen as a lighting partner since our lighting solutions, especially the Smart family, offer the quality needed for this kind of project. Marisa Gallo thought Smart lotis (82 & 115), Smart kup 82 and Smart surface tubed 82 perfectly fitted into the interior she had in mind. “Modular offers fixtures that are designed with great care. These lighting solutions help us highlight certain details in this project.”
We want to show you more images of the event on our social media, so stay tuned there as well!
Design District sneak peek
May 24, 2016
A nice location, high end design brands, the latest innovations, up and coming designers, a professional audience… Design District has it all! Because it’s hard to stand out at an event like this, Modular has something quite unusual in store.
Design District is the main interior design event in the Netherlands. For its 14th edition this year, about 150 high quality design brands will gather at Taets in Zaandam next week (June 1-3). You will be able to get inspired by over 7 000 m² filled with the latest innovations in interior design. Of course Modular will be there and we have something special in mind!
Not your everyday fair booth
Modular likes to leave the beaten path. That’s why you won’t find our booth in the exhibition hall, but outside the entrance of the Design District fair. On top of that, our lighting solutions will be featured in a special booth that was designed by graduate students at the secondary school of design De Rooi Pannen in Tilburg (Netherlands).
Why we did this? Because we appreciate the enthusiasm, like to encourage the innovativeness and want to be inspired by the collaboration with young talented people! It’s always very educational to work with students and exchange ideas. Their ‘fresh’ opinion about our brand, our communication theme and about lighting in general is extremely interesting to us.
Also, Design District likes to give young talented people and companies the opportunity to show the public what they’re capable of. This makes it the perfect place to allow students to design our booth.
What to expect
For Design District we’re bringing a wide array of lighting solutions with us. You will get the chance to discover some of our long-time icons, but most of all; you’ll be able to get to know our newest fixtures, like Semih and Kanon! Everything will be featured in a marvelous architectural booth.
All graduate design students at De Rooi Pannen presented a mock up for this booth. All of them indicated that they wanted to design a booth that suits the Modular creed ‘Stand out from the crowd’. According to the students, this means that Modular is an innovating and rejuvenating brand that tends to think out of the box.
Three students really stood out. They then enthusiastically combined their proposals into one design. Laura, Luna and Tim all brought something special to the table, creating a very interesting combination of elements.
Laura triggered us through the use of Vaeder’s characteristic honeycomb shape in a thought-through practical booth. Luna playfully emphasized the beauty of man and animal, which is the main idea of our new brand campaign. She tried showing things in a different light, simply by adding blacklight paint. Finally, Tim was able to show us the essence of light, merely by using a piece of white polystyrene in which he carved lines, thus creating an artistically interplay of shadows and contrast.
Design District 2016
All information about the upcoming edition and all extra activities can be found at designdistrict.nl.
You will find us at booth B01.
De Rooi Pannen
The design campus of De Rooi Pannen educates enthusiastic and creative youngsters to become versatile professionals in the world of advertising, presentations and communication. They are sometimes called the merry makers of our society and add some colour, design and light to the world.
Finally we would also like to thank the people at SIXpack, who helped with the design, creation and realization of our booth!

Enjoy our warm dim cosiness
October 06, 2016
"Oh yeah, baby..."
There are times when you just want to create a more sultry mood. Sometimes a room needs something more. It needs to be a tad more intimate. You want to give it that magical soft glow and a warmer feeling. This is exactly why Modular introduces warm dimming for several LED fixtures.
Our warm dim technology enables you to dim LEDs, thus creating the same warm ambiance as that of a dimmed halogen lamp. With matching high CRI values over dimming, a full range of beam angles and LED gears, impeccable dimming results without any hiccups. The integration of this technology in Modular's design architectural fixtures broadens the horizon of our emblematic fixtures. What's also good to know: as this technology is integrated into a module developed by our very own in-house designers, our warm dim solution is much more efficient - even at system level - than any other available on the market today!
When dimming halogen lamps, the colour temperature automatically drops. A dimmed halogen lamp thus radiates a warmer, more atmospheric light than one operating at full capacity. Although it has been possible to dim LED lighting for some time now, the colour temperature remained unchanged, resulting in a different ambiance from that of dimmed halogen light. However, the recently developed ‘warm dimming’ technology enables dimmed LED and halogen light to create the same warm ambiance.
Modular is applying this technology to several fixtures: Smart 82, Smart 115 adjustable, M-LED 50 and M-LED 70. The two Smart spotlights are proud members of the popular Smart collection. This family allows you to choose from a wide array of accessories for a basic LED spotlight that comes in three designs: Smart cake, Smart lotis and Smart kup. Each of these designs creates a different lighting effect. The huge variety in shapes and colours offered by Smart makes this the ideal solution for every project.
More fixtures will follow soon!
