Novelties 2015

May 06, 2015

Modular Lighting Instruments is happy to show you our novelties for 2015!

Vaeder

With a name derived from the English verb ‘evade’, it is clear from the start that Vaeder will run a mile from the merely average. This new fixture feels equally at home in an energy-efficient, ergonomic office environment as in a home office. Its characteristic honeycomb structure in combination with a wafer-thin diffuser reduces glare to a minimum, whilst Vaeder’s ground breaking LED lighting results in an energyefficient and high performing office fixture, responding to the official standard EN 12464-1.

H55

A simple profile that can cast its light either upwards or downwards, and that is available either as a pendant or wall-mounted. Next to the linear custom made solution, H55 is also available as a ready-made solution in order to meet the rising demand for versatile architectural LED lighting lines.

M-LED 111

Modular is famous for its custom made solutions in light lines. As well as the continuous LED lines and the small LED modules (ø 50), the larger AR111 modules are now also being replaced with an excellent LED alternative: the M-LED 111. From now on, these modules can also be integrated into the SL149 and 2FLAT2C profiles, both of which are ideal high-performance lighting solutions.

Single Round

A showdown between square and round shapes. Based on the squared shape of its brother, Single round combines best of both worlds. The M-LED 111 module, designed by Modular R&D, is well hosted in an aluminum cylinder. The singular connection with the hinge contributes to a highly directional fixture. Well fitted for use in specific retail projects thanks to the performant and efficient LED engine.

Single Square

Single square is a real player that likes to go to town on its hinge points and square corners which are incorporated into the design. This means that this fixture is a versatile and highly directional spotlight, which is installed using the rail system. Single square is chief ly used in retail projects. Thanks to the integration of the new M-LED 111 and the relevant LED gear, Single square has become an extremely high performing and ideal retail spotlight.

Smart asy Lotis 48

In 2012, Modular launched Smart, a diverse family of spotlights with cutting-edge technology encased in a typical Modular design. Today we are launching a stranger in our Smart midst: Smart asy lotis 48. It has all the features of the Smart lotis family but has one additional benefit: asymmetry. The light shines down at an angle of 28°, which creates an attractive light spread on the surface.

Smart Cake 48

Smart cake is part of the Smart family. This family’s styling is based on our most popular iconic designs. Its gently sloping sides ensure a soft distribution of light. Since its introduction in 2012, Smart has become an extensive portfolio with a broad range of accessories. Today we are launching a new diameter. The new 48 mm spotlight is also suitable for bathroom and other humid areas. Both IP20 and IP54 versions can be combined with the Smart surface tubed 48.

Smart Kup 48

Smart kup is one of the 3 forms of the Smart family. The cone of the Smart kup ends in a fine trim. The same subtle trim is used in several other Modular luminaires. The new 48 mm spotlight is also suitable for bathroom and other humid areas. Both IP20 and IP54 versions can be combined with the Smart surface tubed 48.

Smart Lotis 48

Smart lotis is the best known fixture within the Smart family. The deeply recessed cone which holds the light source inspired the designers to create a highly versatile spot to be combined with multiple accessories. Now the range is extended with a smaller diameter. Playful setting of multiple Smart lotis on the ceiling or fixed in the wall generate a subtle guide in your space. The new 48 mm spotlight is also suitable for bathroom and other humid areas. Both IP20 and IP54 versions can be combined with the Smart surface tubed 48.

Designs inspired by nature

June 09, 2015

A lot of our lighting solutions are inspired by nature. This means our R & D department often takes a peek at Mother Nature to find inspiration for the design or technology of a new fixture. Here's an overview!

Vaeder

One of our latest luminaires is a perfect example of nature being a source of inspiration for our designers. Of course we are talking about Vaeder, designed by interior designer Gerd Couckhuyt. This new fixture is known for its characteristic honeycomb structure, which in combination with a wafer-thin diffuser reduces glare to a minimum. This makes it a perfect office luminaire, perfect to be mounted above your desk.

Flat Moon (Square)

Flat moon, what’s in a name. It’s clear from the start that this luminaire is inspired by one of nature’s brightest celestial bodies: our moon. Looking like an enchanting full moon, Flat moon shines its uniform and functional light into your room with an outstanding lighting performance.

Izar

Izar may look a bit futuristic, but fundamentally its shape is based on another nightly celestial body: a star! This three-legged, rounded star, again by interior designer Gerd Couckhuyt, looks great in combination with others of its kind, so it looks like a starry night sky. This luminaire cries to be used creatively!

Médard

Médard proves nature is the best source of inspiration for great designs. It was Dutch design agency Bleijh who came up with the idea of designing Médard like an insect stick. Its quircky nature also fits the Modular DNA perfectly and its highly versatile orientable head makes sure this lamp fits all rooms and applications! This design has managed to bring home two awards: the iF Design Award for 2015 and the Good Industrial Design Award 2014!

Branch

Lighitng modules that look like tree stumps? Well, that can only be Branch (again; what’s in a name?)! They can be clicked together, using connectors, to resemble tree branches of various heights. These look great in a outdoor environment, like your garden! You can choose to put lights in the woodpecker's holes to create a mysterious effect when at night! This fixture was designed in cooperation with Rotorgroup, a Belgian designer- and communications agency. It was awarded with the Henry van de Velde Label in 2008.

Fall

Modular of course is a Belgian company, so why not use Belgium’s humble natural environment as a source of inspiration? Belgium tends to be a windy place, which makes trees alongside canals grow in odd angles. The shape of these trees tends to be identical, so it creates a strong and recognizable image. Fall, an exterior fixture was inspired by this image, albeit in a more minimalist shape. It is bent at a 10° angle, as if the wind makes it bow.

Meet our new products

June 18, 2015

For the second time in only a few months we are presenting a load of novelties to the public. This time we proudly present to you reworks of Modular icons and an innovative new fixture: Drupl 70! Let’s start by introducing our newest Modular family member.

Drupl 70

Did you ever witness that magical moment when sunlight hits a raindrop? This tends to create an eye-catching lighting spectacle which we wanted to recreate in our latest fixture: Drupl 70.

This special luminaire is specifically designed for the office market. It uses a unique combination of optic lenses on top of the LED lighting to create bright and glare-free light. This combination makes sure the Drupl 70 has a very low UGR of only 13 and ensures a perfect fit in all offices! Our R&D department was firm from the start to make Drupl 70 pay homage to this new technology. The intriguing visual effect of the optical components (the lenses) in combination with LED technology is what inspired us to make the technology visible and leading.

Of course you can further tweak Drupl 70 to your liking. First of all, you’re free to choose the colors of the base, top cover and finishing covers. These come in anodized alu, black-, white structure and in RAL colors. Next, you can also choose your favorite shape for the finishing covers which hide all screws at the bottom part of the fixture. We have three designs and it’s up to you to decide which one fits best: curved, straight or sharp.  This refined finishing makes the Drupl 70 a very elegant continuous lighting solution.

K72 & K77 adjustable

K is one of those fixtures who earned its spurs in the Modular range. That is why we decided it deserves to have an LED dedicated make-over. We made this decision to honour an icon we hope to remain in the Modular portfolio for many more years! This spotlight is versatile to say the least! Suitable for both general and accent lighting, our new K comes in two versions: a fixed (K72) and an adjustable (K77) one and in two colors: our new donkey grey and white structure.

K72 is fitted with a glass cover, which makes it standard IP54. This means it can be installed in moist rooms. K77 in turn was developed as an extension to K72. In easy terms this could be called K72's adjustable sister. It is as basic as K72, but the adjustability means it looses its IP54 rating. Both K72 as  K77 adjustable have a very low build-in height of only 60 mm, which makes them one of the smallest LED spots in the market! To finish things off; their dedicated heat sink guarantees an extremely long life cycle.

Nomad 111

Nomad is another Modular classic that really deserves its LED make-over! This refined fitting with its characteristic industrial look-and-feel is perfect for highlighting special elements in every interior. Again, as with the Drupl 70, technology is key here. Its visible wiring and heatsinks prove that you don't always have to hide all technical components to make a fixture look good. The Nomad family comprises a wide range of lighting solutions and with the integration of the new M-LED 111, in combination with the appropriate LED gear, Nomad is ready for a bright future! This Nomad 111 comes in a two- or four lamps version and in alu, black or white structure.

Slide

Yet another Modular icon we like to keep around for many more years: Slide. Its name refers to the light gliding out of the luminaire thanks to its nice designed inner body, combined with a deeply embedded light source. This results in a soft and smooth lighting experinece. It comes in the new Modular donkey grey structure with black inner body or in a complete white structure version.

Next to its great design, Slide is equipped with highly performant dedicated LED technology, combined with a Modular designed reflector. To finish things off, this fixture is fitted with two asymmetrcal leaf springs, which allows an easy installation on any surface, and a transparent glass to ensure an IP54 rating. This is why Slide fits perfectly in bathrooms or sheltered outdoor areas.

Smart Cake/Kup/Lotis 160

Smart cake, -kup and -lotis are all part of Modular's beloved Smart family. A family characterized by its styling, based on our most popular iconic designs who are happy to introduce to you a new diameter size: 160. The Smart cake's gently sloping sides ensure a soft distribution of light, while Smart kup's cone ends in a fine subtle trim that is also used in several other Modular luminaires. Smart lotis in turn is the best known fixture within the Smart family. Its deeply recessed cone holds the light source and inspired our designers to create a highly versatile spot. The complete Smart family can be combined with multiple Smart accessories (a Smart mask, surface box or tubed).

SInce its introduction in 2012, Smart has become an extensive portfolio with a full range of lighting solutions, including different diameters and accessories. Our latest Smart 160 is designed as a general lighting spot for retail, office and hospitality applications. It comes with a transparant glass or a diffuse polycarbonate. Both versions are IP54 and can be combined with the Smart mask. Combined with an appropriate driver it can be tuned in output from 2700 up to 4500 lumen and its specially designed bionic heat sink enables a long life cycle with high efficiency!

Engineering design inspired by nature.

July 08, 2015

Modular Lighting Instruments has a lot of lighting solutions inspired by nature. For example; designers and engineers looked at insect sticks to design Médard or trees to develop Branch and Fall. We covered these designs before, but now we want to highlight one of our latest lighting solutions inspired by Mother Nature.

Drupl 70

One of our latest releases, Drupl 70, is a great example to show the important role nature plays in the development of new technologies and products. We tried to recreate that magical moment when sunlight hits a raindrop in this office fixture.

This luminaire is specifically designed for the office market and uses a unique combination of two technologies: LED lighting and optical components (lenses). This creates a bright and glare-free light that perfectly fits office areas because of the extremely low UGR of only 13! Drupl 70 meets the requirements of EN12464-1, which regulates workstation lighting.

The intriguing visual effect of the lenses, in combination with LED technology makes this luminaire look like raindrops hanging on a profile and sunlight shining through them.  By putting lenses on top of the LED lighting, we were able to control and direct the light under a certain angle, just like when sunlight hits water.

The H-shaped base of this luminaire houses the gears in the upper part. The bottom part, housing the technology, should be finished off with a special cover finishing. We have three designs and it’s up to you to decide which one fits best: curved, straight or sharp. These covers give the Drupl 70 that extra touch.

Bionic heatsinks

A lot of our latest spotlights have a specially designed bionic heat sink. Modular R&D has developed these their selves. They're so proud of them they even like to show them, while most manufacturers tend to hide this technology. On our latest Nomad 111 the heat sinks are visible at all times and are a key feature of the design. These ensure a longer life cycle of these products and are also inspired by nature, more specifically by the veins of a leaf and the human blood circulation.

You can see in the picture below our heat sinks (right), next to a conventional one (left). The heat sinks Modular R&D created dissipate warmth more efficiently and naturally.

The importance of light at the office

August 10, 2015

To be able to perform tasks comfortably, lighting in a working space should not only provide a minimal amount of luminous intensity, it also can’t be blinding, too bright or irregular. In office lighting, there are a few basic needs that need to be met.

First of all there’s the importance of visual comfort. When employees feel comfortable, they’re more likely to be more productive. Feeling comfortable is highly influenced by the lighting in a working area. Secondly, there’s visual performance, or the ability to perform visual tasks, even in difficult circumstances and over long periods of time. Lighting is important for people to be able to read, both on paper and on computer screens, or recognize shapes and faces. Finally, there’s security; a well-lit work area is a safe work area.

Before we go into the specifics of office lighting; you can find the basic parameters of lighting design in the graphic to the left.

Visual Comfort

Visual comfort is affected by a very important aspect of a working environment: the luminance distribution. This has a huge impact on how much your eyes need to adapt to the light in a working area. When the luminance is too high, it can lead to glare and is tiring for the eyes. This can be the case when a desk is well-lit, but the surrounding areas aren’t. This results in too much contrast between the working space and the surrounding area, forcing the eyes to constantly adapt to different lighting. On the other hand, when the luminance (contrast) is too low, it makes for a dull room, which is never a stimulating working environment…

The people at our light studio department always advise to combine a desk lighting luminaire, like
Vaeder, with smaller, inconspicuous (spot)lighting in the background. Have a look at our Smart family (kup, lotis or cake) for instance!

Illuminance and illumination distribution on work surfaces and their vicinity influence the level of comfort, execution speed and safety in a working environment. The illuminance in a working space should be increased when:

  •      - visual work is critical
  •      - fixing errors is hard and expensive
  •      - accuracy and high productivity are important
  •      - the eyesight of the executor is below average
  •      - the details of the task are very small, or have low contrast
  •      - a task takes unusually long

On the other hand, illuminance should be decreased when details of tasks are unusually large, have high contrast or when tasks take unusually short. Generally speaking; a room that is constantly in use should have a minimum of 200 Lux.

Unified Glare Rating

Another immensely important parameter with office lighting is glare. There are four types of glare and all should be minimalized.

  •      - Direct glare: the result of looking directly into an intense light source.
  •      - Indirect glare: the result of reflection of light (e.g. computer screen or window).
  •      - Discomfort glare: this glare source isn't too bright, so this type of glare is merely a nuisance.
  •      - Disability glare: interferes with your vision (illuminance of the glare source is much higher)

The Unified Glare Rating (UGR) expresses the amount of direct glare by a luminaire. Simply put, this is the logarithm of the glare of all lamps, divided by the lumination in the background. According to EN 12464-1 lighting standards for offices, the UGR in working spaces should be 19 or below.

Since the office lighting market is quickly growing, Modular has launched some nice UGR friendly fixtures that meet the EN 12464-1 standards. Examples are to be found in the comprehensive portfolio of our Smart family, while Vaeder and Drupl 70 are our newest UGR friendly office luminaires.

For example: Vaeder with a white honeycomb structure and Drupl 70 have UGR’s of respectively 16.3 and 13. Certain Smart familymembers have an UGR of as low as five or six! Depending on the gear you use, the Unified Glare Ratings of different Smart fixtures range between 5 en 19!
